Successful Planting and Care Of Your New Tree Or Shrub

A tree or shrub planted correctly will grow twice as fast as one that is planted incorrectly.

Soil Preparation
For a small or medium size tree, prepare the hole by digging a hole approximately twice the size of the pot.
For larger trees, the hole should be a couple of inches wider than the pot or root ball.

If your soil is hard and compact, break up the soil and add compost to create better soil conditions for future root development.

Planting Instructions

Place tree in hole and carefully position it upright. Make sure the root crown is one or two inches above the ground.
Pack the soil firmly but not too tight around the root ball. Backfill around the tree and pack it down to eliminate air pockets.
Mulch around the tree with a one to two inch layer, and create a "bowl" around the circumference of the tree (at least as wide as the root ball). Fill bowl with water and let it drain.Fill again and repeat this every other day.

A Few More Tips
If your tree is a B&B (balled and burlaped) open the burlap at the top and plant according to above directions.
The amount of rainfall, daily temps and your soil conditons will all determine how much water your new tree needs. On the average, every other daywill be sufficient, but adjust as needed.
It is important not to add any type of chemical fertilizer directly into the hole, as it can damage the young roots of your new tree.

With your proper planting and daily care, your tree will remain healthy and strong.
